A Maqam Is Not a Scale
Arabic Music & Oud

The most common mistake in Western descriptions of Arabic music is to present a maqam as an exotic scale with unusual intervals. The notes are the smallest part of it.

What a maqam actually carries

  • Ajnas. A maqam is built from smaller units of three, four or five notes, each with its own character. Rast is a jins of rast on the tonic with another above it, and the seam between them is where the music breathes.
  • Sayr. The path. Which note you start on, which you dwell on, where you may go and in what order. Two maqamat can share every pitch and remain unmistakably different because their sayr differs.
  • Modulation. Where you are permitted to leave, and how you return. A listener who knows the tradition hears a modulation the way a reader hears a change of narrator.

Why this matters for a listener

Once you know the sayr, taqsim stops sounding like free improvisation and becomes something closer to argument: a statement, a departure, tension held longer than comfortable, and a resolution that satisfies precisely because it was delayed. The pleasure is structural, and it is available to anyone who listens for the shape rather than the scale.
